Vacation autoreply

To send an automatic reply like I am on vacation..., just create a file vacation.txt in your home directory (H:disk). This file will be sent as reply to incoming messages. See email filtering documentation for details.

Advanced mail filtering

You can influence how your mail is delivered by changing the file .mailfilter in your homedirectory. Warning! this file is only interpreted correctly when it is in Unix fileformat. Do not edit this file in notepad, it will become corrupted (DOS fileformat) and you will lose your incoming mail. Using Editpad light edition under windows, or Vim if you can deal with the vi modes will work. Logging in under Linux and using a graphical editor will also work. The default .mailfilter file has some other options. If you want to start over with a corrupt .mailfilter file you can either delete it completely (the mail system will fall back to the default of delivering your mail in your inbox) or re-download the original working version of our default .mailfilter and install it as .mailfilter again.
Documentation for .mailfilter file.

Mailing lists

Mailman-style mailing list are available on request. See the overview of published lists and the admin interface.
See also the overview of staff mailing lists. The β-faculty provides mail lists per course. These lists send mail to students' SOLISmail address.

Solis mail (students)

Web access to this mail is available at Solismail webinterface.

You can use other clients (thunderbird, mutt etc) to read solismail ; Configure your client to use IMAP host solismail.uu.nl with port 993 with SSL enabled. For details, see IMAP-client for solismail.

To change your forward from solis-mail visit the Solis-Ugids webinterface. Select 'Inloggen', log in with solisid and password, select 'Eigen gegevens' (own data) and there you will see a "Forward e-mailadres" field. Enter the correct address and confirm with "Wijzig" (change). Do not set forwards anymore from solismail to @cs.uu.nl or @students.cs.uu.nl addresses ; this will cause a mail loop.

Winmail.dat

Solismail users are urged to read this Microsoft knowledge base article: How to Prevent the Winmail.dat File from Being Sent to Internet Users which explains how to set up your e-mail correctly so people do not get bothered by the winmail.dat attachment.

Address books

This functionality is not available at the moment with the new identity and access management (NIAM) ldap servers

The solis-ugids address book is directly available for ldap-aware mail applications such as Thunderbird. Add an 'LDAP directory server', Name Solis Ugids, Hostname ldap.uu.nl, Base DN ou=medewerkers,o=uu, port number 389. This only works inside the UU network.
