Remote access to our systems

Several ways are available to access our systems remotely. The choice depends on what you want to do from the outside world. There are some differences in options and software needed.

The main differences:

• VPN: allows you to work as if your computer is part of our network. You can access most services (windows file servers, database servers, internal web pages). VPN needs special software, extra drivers and full administrative access on your system.
• SSH access: allows you to work on the command-line of one of the unix servers available. SSH needs a bit of extra software, no special rights on your system but it needs to be set up beforehand.
• Webproxy access: allows you to browse the web as if you were on our network. This needs working SSH access.

VPN access

Computer science participates in the central VPN project. Students and staff members can access the VPN. The following services are available:

• Access to filesystems and most internal servers as if you are inside our network.
• Access to library websites as if you are inside our network.

Students and staff members can use SSH to log in from outside our network to the shell servers.

Remote access to internal web pages and other restricted web sites

As an extension of having SSH access you can also use this to portforward to our internal web proxy.

Remote access to the Intranet, and other UU restricted sites
