Every member of the Department now has a UU solis mail-account.

What is happening:

Separate e-mail for the computer science department (@cs.uu.nl addresses) will end, computer science (like the rest of the science faculty) will use the central UU mail facility named solismail from now on.

What this means for you as a user:

The migration planning:

How to find out (or set) your uu.nl e-mailaddress:

Using your webbrowser, visit Solis-Ugids and select 'Eigen gegevens'. The website will request your solis-id and password, enter these and push 'Inloggen'. In the resulting screen will be a line with your "E-mail adres" and a link to "E-mailadres Zelfservice".

We're sorry to inform you the E-mailadres zelfservice is currently broken ; request a change with ict-servicedesk ; current options appear to be achternaam@uu.nl, voornaam.achternaam@uu.nl and x.achternaam@uu.nl where x is the first letter of your first name.

How to configure mail-clients:

How to set up solismail in Thunderbird: Go to 'Account settings', select 'Add mail account'. You will be asked for 'Your name', 'Email address' (what you just found) and password (the password for your solisid).

A popup may show during this process that there is an SSL certificate mismatch between solis-mail.uu.nl and solismail.uu.nl, ignore this warning for now as it should not show up anymore when your settings are correct.

Thunderbird will guess some of the setup values, but these are partially wrong. You need to change these to the following:

Username : your solisid
Incoming server : solismail.uu.nl, type imap, port 993, SSL/TLS
Outgoing server : solismail.uu.nl, type smtp, port 587, STARTTLS

Select 'Create account'.

This leaves two settings wrong. To fix these, go to 'Account settings', select 'Outgoing server (SMTP)', find 'solismail.uu.nl', and edit this entry :

If you still get errors sending out mail, check that the email address you set for solismail is exactly the same as the email address you have in the solis-ugids.

Thunderbird may lose sync with the folders on the exchange server. To fix this, right-click on the solismail Inbox and select the 'Subscribe...' option to see all available subfolders and subscribe to the ones you want to see. You may need to restart Thunderbird.

How to move mailarchives you want to keep:

Some mail-clients can move mailarchives from one server to another, others can't. For instance, thunderbird has that option, and squirrel-mail (webmail) doesn't.

With Thunderbird you can drag messages or entire mailboxes between accounts, so we suggest you use that program to move your archives. Moving more than a few hundred mails at a time may cause problems. For configuration of Thunderbird, see above.

The quota on solismail has been set high enough so each user can move her or his entire archive, based on the usage in May 2011.

Webmail access to solismail:

Go to https://solismail.uu.nl/ and log in with your solisid and password

Problems ?

All support via the Science servicemeldpunt (English) / Science servicemeldpunt (Dutch)

Attachments (pdf) are corrupt

This is caused by a miscommunication between Exchange and Thunderbird. Solution: In Thunderbird use menu path Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> General tab -> click on the Config Editor button. In the filter entry line, enter mail.server.default.fetch_by_chunks. When that setting is displayed in the lower pane, double click on the value to toggle it to false.

Missing folders after moving them

Thunderbird doesn't always keep up with new folder subscriptions so you may miss folders you just moved to Solismail. Solution: right-click on the Solismail Inbox and select Subscribe... which will show all folders. Enable the folders you want to see.
