Staff account migration to soliscom accounts

Migration 2011

For 28 years (since 1983) members of Vakgroep Informatica, Computer Science Department and Department of Information and Computing Sciences have used cs-staff accounts.

The cs.uu.nl accounts will be replaced by Solis accounts. This helpdesk page is updated to keep the users informed of the migration.

The migration has three parts:

• [done] mail: cs.uu.nl mail will migrate to the uu.nl mail system
• [done] data: home directories and www directories will migrate to science storage
• [done] domain: users and pc's will switch to UU's soliscom domain
• [in progress] www: the www tree will migrate to soliscom owners and beta infra

For the www file tree, we have prepared a switch from cs-accounts (like henkp) to solis_id's (like penni101).

Please read the following, look at the new stuff, and tell us if you see a problem.

We have copied the department's www tree and changed the ownerships and permissions to solis_id's.

This copy is for testing only!

The copy can be found :

On Linux :

• host : csstaff.science.uu.nl (use solis_id and password)
• tree : /users/www
• Note: after the switch Linux user must maintain their webpages here, on this host.

On Windows :

• share : \\smbwwwtest.cs.uu.nl\www
• use solis_id and password, domain soliscom
• Note: after the switch this share will disappear again ; and \\smbwwwfs.cs.uu.nl\www will point to the right filetree.

In WWW space :

Unless big problems are found, we will switch next week:

• freeze the old data
• copy 'operational' to 'test' for the last time ;
• fix ownerships and permissions in 'test'
• restart the webserver www.cs.uu.nl with the 'test' (then 'operational') data

After the switch :

• 'test' will become the contents of www.cs.uu.nl
• wwwcs.cs.uu.nl will disappear again
• Linux users maintain their web pages on (solis, beta) host csstaff.science.uu.nl. You can try it now :
  • login with solis_id on csstaff.science.uu.nl
  • goto your files in /users/www/
  • edit something
  • see the change in http://wwwcs.cs.uu.nl/
  • NOTE: until the switch happens, all such changes will be discarded.
    After the switch, the changes will be permanent.
• Windows users keep using \\smbwwwfs.cs.uu.nl\www ; we will point it to the new filetree ; you may have to reboot your machine to make the change effective.

Notes:

1. we will copy "operational -> test" at irregular intervals.
2. wwwcs.cs.uu.nl sometimes links to 'www.cs.uu.nl' ; when testing, please watch the "url bar" of you browser ; change 'www.cs.uu.nl' by hand to 'wwwcs.cs.uu.nl' to continue testing.
3. Apart from (prev-bullit), the test stuff should behave exactly as the current stuff ; please report problems.
4. Only cs-dept staff can use host 'csstaff.science.uu.nl' ; (regarding www maintainance) this machine will replace 'shell.cs.uu.nl' (aka 'adonis'), 'venus' etc and will eventually be replaced by "staff.science.uul.nl".
5. We improved handling of ACLs (access control list, a per/file list of users with full rights) ; In the future you can't use "staff writable" files and/or directories to solve an access/permission problem (unless you trust all beta-staff).

   • files are owned by the first user in the list
   • the others have the same rights as the owner.
   For the 'test' system, the cs-accounts are tranlated to solis_ids.
6. The https apps (holidays, reservations etc) still use cs-accounts for authentication ; changing that is next on the list.

Staff home directories

Staff homedirs are synced to beta staff storage. Your cs.uu.nl home-directory is copied (periodically) to the subdirectory CS.UU.NL-home. When copying, we do not replace a newer file on the science side by an older version on the cs.uu.nl side.

You can copy your own data :

• login on adonis.cs.uu.nl ; then sync your data :

    sync-to-science your-solis_id
  

• or, do a dry-run ; it just shows which files would be copied :

    sync-to-science -n your-solis_id
  

Accessing your old CS homedir from beta systems

Open \\home.cs.uu.nl\cs-login in Windows explorer or smb://home.cs.uu.nl/cs-login in a linux/macosx file browser and log in with your cs-login and your cs-windows password. This only works in the CS network (or via CS vpn).

Staff personal web directories

Staff personal web directories are synced to beta staff storage. Your cs.uu.nl www-directory is copied (periodically) to the subdirectory CS.UU.NL-www. On finishing the migration of your user account and when you have no prior science personal webspace in a subdir www the directory CS.UU.NL-www will be renamed to www which will activate it as science personal webspace When copying, we do not replace a newer file on the science side by an older version on the cs.uu.nl side.

You can copy your own data :

• login on adonis.cs.uu.nl ; then sync your data :

    sync-to-science -www your-solis_id
  

• or, do a dry-run ; it just shows which files would be copied :

    sync-to-science -www -n your-solis_id

• your science www directory is ~/www/ ; to test, on staff.science.uu.nl do

  cd ; ln -s CS.UU.NL-www www

• in your browser, visit

Shell servers

Take note: shell servers adonis.cs.uu.nl (aka shell.cs.uu.nl), venus.cs.uu.nl and titan.cs.uu.nl all mount your old home directory. Changes you make on these systems after your account is migrated will not show up on the science storage automatically, you are responsible for syncing that data!

Server staff.science.uu.nl mounts your science homedirectory. Get in touch via the ict-servicedesk if you miss anything on that server.

Access to the www.cs.uu.nl webspace

The www.cs.uu.nl webspace (mainly for http://www.cs.uu.nl/docs/vakken/) is available as SMB/CIFS mount at \\smbwwwfs.cs.uu.nl\www which will ask for your OLD cs.uu.nl windows credentials STAFF\username and associated password. This will change at some date in the future to use soliscom logins.

Varia

project space

Project space (/projects/) will be copied to beta storage. We believe it is obsolete and replaced by svn-like solutions. On request, subtrees can be copied into science's project structure, and setup with proper ownership, acl's etc.

roaming profiles

Beta does not support roaming profiles. Windows will use your on-disk profile.

What homedir am I looking at anyway?

• If you see a subdirectory CS-data in your homedirectory, you are looking at the science homedirectory server. You're good. Your data as synced is in this directory.
• Otherwise, check your mappings and environment.

[in progress] Switch to soliscom domain

After the switch users login with their solis_id and password ; settings may be lost or may have changed.

Before the switch:

• save important settings like the bookmarks of your browser, the addressbook of your mail client etc.
• to save settings, use the application's export facility

The cs.uu.nl mailserver will be terminated.

• all staff mail facilities will migrate to UU mail systems
• all mailing lists will migrate to science.uu.nl systems

The previous situation for cs.uu.nl staff was :

• This forward is controlled by contents of ugids ;

The current situation for cs.uu.nl staff is :

• User user0101 has mailbox(es) on imap server solismail.uu.nl
• Mail to karel@cs.uu.nl is forwarded to K.vanVliet@uu.nl
• This forward can be set in the ~karel/.mailfilter file ;
  add a line to your ~/.mailfilter ; a line that looks like :

  to "!K.vanVliet@uu.nl"

printing

Geert-Jan Giezeman writes (12 Sep 2011) : At the moment printing does not work from some systems. This is due to a change of the IP-address of the printers.

There is bad news: printing on color_xx and laspr_xx will not be possible the coming days.

There is also good news: those printers can also be approached by their science name. Details of how this should be done follow below.

Then there is some bad news. The change of the IP-addres was done because the printer queues will all move to a university-wide name in a few weeks. So, you will have to do the steps below again in a few weeks.

Anyway, here is how to fix things on Windows XP (Windows 7 is similar). You should do the following first with an administrator account (otherwise the drivers can't be installed) and then with you own account (otherwise you won't see the printers)

Open Printers and Devices
Add a printer
Add a network printer
Connect to this printer:
  \\print.science.uu.nl\sc606...

The science name of the printers can be found on the printers. The actual names are a bit longer than that, but they will be filled in when you type.
