Every user is requested to use the personal space for personal material and the shared webspace for education and research related material. The department should not have a problem when your personal webspace is unavailable or removed, for instance after you leave the department.
Unix users can access their personal webspace on machines that have the
standard filesystems as
/users/www/people/username/
and the shared webspace as /users/www.
Windows users on our staff network can access their personal webspace as
\\staff_www\personalsite\username
and the shared webspace as \\staff_www\www.
Users not on our local network such as VPN users can access the shared webspace as \\smbwwwfs.cs.uu.nl\www and their personal webspace as \\wwwfs.cs.uu.nl\personalsite, log in with STAFF\username, more details in the VPN help pages.
Private webspace can be addressed as
http://people.cs.uu.nl/username/
Shared webspace can be addressed as http://www.cs.uu.nl/
Webspace for students
Webspace for students is no longer available at www.students.cs.uu.nl.
As part of the science storage environment there is space for a personal webpage.
Restricting access to web content
Has gotten its own explanation at
Limiting access to webspace.
PHP
As web-scripting language, php is supported. But, php is run in safe_mode
with open_basedir restrictions, so don't expect any script you get and
install to work. All other (cgi) scripting is disabled by default.
As a special measure, we will set up a 'website database login' script for you outside the reachable webspace, so you can use a database login without other users being able to see the login.
This and any other special configuration items on the webserver are possible
given a good reason (related to research and education).
Specials
Specials are also possible (high traffic websites, special scripting wishes,
big binary downloads, others).
Mirrors
We mirror software archives at http://archive.cs.uu.nl/. Mirrors
are chosen based on our own use and the need a certain software project
has for mirror capacity.
Web access statistics
Statistics on the use of various webservers hosted here can be viewed
at statistics.
